Irish Employers Continue Hiring Strongly into Q3 Despite the Economic Uncertainty

Ireland hiring outlook q3 2023

Irish employers anticipate a strong staffing climate during Q3 2023 with a Net Employment Outlook (NEO) of +26 percentage points. Irish hiring managers expect the NEO to strengthen by 4 percentage points compared to the previous quarter, but to worsen by 14 points compared to this quarter last year. Ireland ranks in the top half in the region for its employment outlook, 6 points above the regional average.

The Irish labour market remains resilient amid economic uncertainty in the region. Irish hiring managers seem even more confident than last quarter, which is likely due to the country's strong economic outlook and growth prospects. Indeed, the Irish economy outperformed the rest of the eurozone last year and is predicted to continue doing so in 2023, as the country attracts a significant amount of large multinationals.

40% of employers in Ireland are planning on expanding their workforce in Q3 2023. The most popular staffing choice is to keep workforces steady with 45% indicating a static workforce projection for the quarter. A minority of 12% anticipate making redundancies to their workforce.

Talent Shortages Report Ireland 2025

2025 Ireland Talent Shortage ReportWhat You Will Find In This Report:Talent shortages by sector, region, and company sizeTop five hardest to find skillsRegions that are struggling in talent attractionHow employers are tackling talent shortagesHow to improve the hiring process to match the marketDownload Our ManpowerGroup 2025 Talent Shortage ReportIs Ireland past the peak of the talent shortage? For over 14 years, ManpowerGroup Ireland has surveyed employers across the country to ask how much difficulty they are having filling vacancies due to a shortage of skilled talent in the labour market. This report explores where skills gaps are widest, which skills are most scarce, and what employers are doing to address these shortages. The research suggest that talent shortages are at record highs in Ireland at the moment and this trend will likely continue throughout 2025.Managing Directors Message, Jonny Edgar, ManpowerGroup Ireland"The ongoing demand in the Ireland talent market means companies will continue to struggle to attract key talent in the current business environment. Talent shortages have now reached record highs with 83% of employers across all sectors and organisational sizes finding the current talent market challenging. Irish companies have worked hard to drive positive change amidst major challenges; by upskilling, reskilling, seeking out new talent pools and through smarter use of technology. Although any movement towards closing the skills gap is positive, other indicators point to an ongoing, challenging talent market in which organisations will need to develop more innovative and sustained talent attraction strategies in order to be successful in their organisational goals”.Download Our ManpowerGroup 2025 Talent Shortage ReportGet In Touch with ManpowerGroup Ireland Today

How to Practice Gratitude at Work

How to Practice Gratitude at WorkGrateful people are successful people.“Gratitude is the ultimate performance-enhancing substance at work,” says Professor Robert Emmons, a gratitude researcher and professor of psychology at UC Davis.Employees who excel at work don’t wait for something good to happen to be thankful; it’s often the other way around. To get yourself on the gratitude track, here are ways to increase gratitude in the workplace.Notice the small thingsAt the end of the work day, make a list of three things that went right. Even if it was a challenging day, anyone can find three positives, such as finishing an important email, booking a meeting or committing to taking a lunch break. Put this in a prominent place at your desk where you’ll see it when you arrive the next day. Be thankful for small wins and use the moment to start the day with momentum.Compliment a colleagueIt’s easy to get wrapped up in our routine and challenges we face. But even when you’re busy – and especially when you’re busy – pausing to notice the accomplishments of a colleague and thank them will lighten your load. When you pay attention to catch your co-workers doing something right, you’re less likely to negatively stew over your problems. The positivity will be reflected back on your mood and productivity.Write simple thank you notesYou don’t have to make a big show of gratitude. A simple post-it-note that’s left on your monitor or on a colleague’s desk will do the job just fine. It’s not the stationary that counts – it’s the thought.Create a digital gratitude folderWhen you get an email that means a lot to you, don’t delete it or let it sit in your inbox. Instead, start a gratitude email folder for compliments and projects you’ve accomplished. Scroll through it on days when you need the extra boost.Gratitude takes work, but it’s worth it. Being mindful of what’s right can help build momentum into a beneficial upward cycle. Thanks for reading – now pass it on.

Your Previous Experience is More Valuable Than Ever

Your Previous Experience is More Valuable Than EverHave you ever spent timescrolling through job listings late at night, wondering if your skills are becoming obsolete? We’ve all been there. With every posting seemingly wanting five years of experience in a technology that was invented last Tuesday, plus expertise in three different programming languages, and somehow also the ability to work miracles on a startup budget, you're left wondering if your current skill set has gone the way of the rotary phone. But there's something that might change how you think about your career: those supposedly "outdated" skills of yours might be more valuable than you realize – just not in the ways you might expect. The Great Skills Migration RevolutionWhile much has been said about chasing the newest technical skills and digital tools, a quiet revolution has been taking place in the job market. Professionals are making remarkable career transitions that don't follow traditional paths; taking their expertise into unexpected industries and succeeding in ways that challenge our assumptions about career development. The conventional wisdom used to be that changing industries meant starting over from scratch. But what we're seeing now tells a different story. Years of experience solving complex problems, managing uncertainty, and understanding how systems work can translate remarkably well into new contexts. It's a fundamental shift in how we think about career development – one that values adaptability and deep understanding over industry-specific technical skills. The "Nobody Saw This Coming" Success StoriesThe renewable energy sector offers a perfect example. Offshore wind farms are actively recruiting experienced oil rig workers – not because these workers know everything about wind energy, but because they understand the complexities of maintaining industrial equipment in some of the most extreme environments on Earth. They've developed crucial knowledge about safety protocols, emergency response, and equipment maintenance that's proving invaluable in this growing industry. When your daily routine involves keeping million-dollar equipment running while Mother Nature is trying to rearrange your workspace, you develop some seriously transferable skills.Traditional watchmakers provide another fascinating example. These skilled craftspeople, whose profession might seem outdated in a world where most people check the time on their phones, are becoming highly valued in medical device manufacturing. Their deep understanding of precision mechanics and quality control – developed through years of working with intricate mechanical systems – is exactly what's needed for creating reliable medical equipment where failure is not an option. It turns out that understanding how to make precise mechanical things that absolutely cannot fail is essential whenyou'redesigning devices that will save lives.Understanding the Power of Deep ExperienceWhat makes these transitions work isn't just technical knowledge –it's something far more valuable. When you spend years working in any field, you develop an intuitive understanding of systems and patterns that goes far beyond your specific role. This deep pattern recognition is what allows experienced professionals to spot potential issues before they become problems, develop innovative solutions, and adapt quickly to new challenges.Think about your ownexpertisefor a moment. When you first started in your field, every task required conscious thought and careful attention. But over time, you developed an almost unconscious ability to spot patterns, anticipateproblems, and know instinctively what would orwouldn'twork. That intuitive understanding – built through years of real-world experience – is incredibly valuable, especially in emerging industries where the rulebook is still being written. We're seeing this play out across industries in fascinating ways. Autonomous vehicle companies are learning crucial insights from career drivers who understand traffic patterns and human behavior in ways that pure technical knowledge and algorithms alone can't match. Former retail managers excel in crisis management roles because they've spent years handling real-world chaos in real time. Teachers are revolutionizing corporate training programs because they understand how people learn and process new information. These transitions work because these professionals bring a deep understanding of human behavior and system dynamics—knowledge that's valuable across industries. The key to leveraging your experience in a new field is learning to think about your skills differently. Instead of focusing on specific tasks, think about the underlying capabilities you've developed. Strong customer service skills reflect an ability to understand people's needs and solve problems under pressure. Project management experience shows you can coordinate complex activities and adapt to changing circumstances. Even something as specific as experience with legacy systems can be invaluable – it often demonstrates an ability to troubleshoot complex problems and find creative solutions with limited resources. When you're considering a career transition, look for industries that might benefit from your pattern recognition and problem-solving abilities. Specific technical skills can often be learned, but the deep understanding that comes from years of experience is much harder to replicate. Why This Matters Now More Than EverHere's the reality check: new industries are popping up faster than we can develop traditional training programs, and they need experienced problem-solvers more than they need people with perfect, industry-specific resumes. The renewable energy sector alone is about to create more jobs than there are people qualified to fill them. We literally cannot wait for everyone to get brand-new degrees or certifications. This creates opportunities for professionals who can adapt their existing knowledge to new contexts. Companies are increasingly realizing that they need people who understand how things can go wrong, who can anticipate problems, and who can bridge the gap between theory and practical implementation. The Future of WorkWe talk a lot about the future of work. Sometimes it seems like that's all we can think about. But the future of work isn't just about learning new technical skills –it's about being able to adapt and apply existing knowledge in new ways. Your experience in solving problems, managing uncertainty, and understanding complex systems might be exactly what an emerging industry needs. The next breakthrough in an emerging field might come from someone bringing years of experience from a completely different industry. Innovation often happens at the intersection of different fields, where experienced professionals can see connections and possibilities that others might miss.In a world obsessed with the new, sometimes the most powerful insights come from those who can bridge the gap between established wisdom and emerging challenges. Your experience isn't just a record of where you've been –it's a toolkit for where you might go next. So, the next time you're scrolling through those job listings late at night, remember that your "outdated" skills might just be the expertise someone is looking for.

ManpowerGroup Ireland Q1 2025 Employment Outlook Report Now Available

Irish Life Science Sector Set for Hiring Boom in 2025Healthcare & Life Sciences sector hiring confidence soars with a Net Employment Outlook of +46%The pandemic is in the rear-view mirror, but the pharma industry indicates plans for a hiring boom going into 2025Information Technology sector reports plans for another strong quarter, with a Net Employment Outlook of +49% Ireland’s Healthcare & Life Sciences sector anticipates a boom in hiring appetite going into the New Year, following a period of restructuring to adapt to a post-pandemic healthcare landscape. According to the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey, the sector’s Net Employment Outlook has increased to +46%, up from +23% last quarter. This is the highest hiring level reported since the pandemic. We’re anticipating the start of a hiring boom across the pharma sector in 2025,” said Jonny Edgar, Managing Director, ManpowerGroup Ireland. “Ireland has become a global hub for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and other life sciences manufacturing, which became a thriving industry throughout the pandemic. However, as consumer needs have changed, the sector took tough decisions to streamline manufacturing and reevaluate product lines, resulting in plant closures and substantial changes to headcounts.“These restructures, which shifted focus away from pandemic-era manufacturing needs, have put the sector in a position to grow in the New Year. Several major businesses, including many of our multinational pharma clients with manufacturing sites across Ireland, have announced plans to hire at scale. Production operators, project engineers, and development scientists have all seen an uptick in demand.” Edgar continued. The Healthcare & Life Sciences sector’s confidence is most pronounced in Dublin, home to much of Ireland’s pharmaceutical industry. Here, employers report a Net Employment Outlook of +58%. In more good news for candidates, Information Technology employers in the capital also report a second consecutive quarter of strong hiring confidence (+48%). Across Ireland, the Information Technology sector reports the strongest hiring appetite of any industry, with a Net Employment Outlook of +49% going into Q1 2025. Meanwhile, the Financials & Real Estate sector has signalled a cooler hiring appetite at +9%, down from +20% last quarter, while the Energy & Utilities sector reports it will be downsizing marginally, with a Net Employment Outlook of -3%. Big business confidence remains strong, with Large Enterprises – companies with more than 5,000 employees – reporting a Net Employment Outlook of +29%, maintaining the strong hiring appetite seen last quarter, well ahead of the cooler prospects reported across Q2 (+12%) and Q3 (+16%) respectively. Regionally, Leinster leads the pack with a Net Employment Outlook of +36%, up 24 percentage points on last quarter, followed by Dublin (+25%), Connaught (+25%), and Munster (+23%), with Ulster [Cavan, Donegal, and Monahan] reporting -11%, indicating job losses overall. “It’s encouraging to see the success story of Ireland’s pharma sector, following the soaring rebound of Ireland’s tech sector earlier in the year. While not all sectors report such optimistic hiring intentions, the positive economic indicators of increasing workforce participation and projected GDP growth, recently revised up from 3.6% to 4% for 2025, should give businesses reason to be upbeat about growth prospects in the New Year.” Edgar explained.“However, it’s clear that not all organisations are preparing for growth, with our data showing the smallest companies expect a headcount reduction, and the energy sector set for a small contraction. Businesses in these industries should look at their skills needs and focus on upskilling their existing workforce to prepare for economic growth. Staying adaptable and investing in skills will be key to navigating the evolving economic landscape in 2025.” Edgar concluded.

How to Thrive in the Age of AI

How to Thrive in the Age of AIWhat if I told you that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is not a threat to your career, but one of the greatest opportunities you'll ever encounter to become truly indispensable?Yes, AI might be able to crunch numbers and analyze data faster than you can say “algorithm,” but it lacks the depth, creativity, and human touch that you can offer. You see, AI is not about replacing humans with machines. It's about unlocking the full potential of people by leveraging the power of technology. Imagine a world where AI takes care of the mundane, the repetitive, and the predictable, freeing you up to tackle the most complex, challenging problems of our time. It's about creating a future where your unique expertise is more valuable than ever before; a future where the specialist reigns supreme. The Generalist's DilemmaLet's face it: being a jack-of-all-trades isn't what it used to be. In the past, generalists were the go-to folks in the workplace. They could juggle multiple tasks, wear different hats, and adapt to any situation. But with AI getting smarter by the day, the role of the generalist is starting to look about as relevant as a rotary phone.Think of AI as that super-smart kid in your class who always had their hand up first (though, admittedly, at times AI is also your annoying friend at the bar, providing confident rather than competent explanations of things they don’t truly understand). This tech whiz can chew through data, spot patterns, and get stuff done faster than you. So, if you're a generalist, you might be feeling a bit like a dinosaur eyeing the big, scary meteor of AI heading straight for you.But it doesn't have to be all doom and gloom. Adapting is something we humans are good at. Remember when emails took over and we thought it was the end of face-to-face communication? We adapted. So, it's time for generalists to adapt again. Learn new skills, embrace tech like AI, and figure out how we can work alongside it instead of competing against it. After all, if we're the jack-of-all-trades, surely we can add 'AI collaborator' to our list of roles. The Specialist's SuperpowerDespite all the hype, there's something that AI still can't touch - our unique, specialized knowledge. Remember that time when your specific skills made a real difference? That's what I'm talking about. Now, don't get me wrong. AI is impressive. It can do a lot of stuff. But compared to the depth of human knowledge in specific fields? Not even close. It's like comparing a microwave dinner to a gourmet meal. The microwave is faster, and it gets the job done, but it doesn't come close to the depth of flavor, the perfect balance, and the artistry that a well-trained chef brings to the table.Would you trust AI, regardless of its sophistication, to perform a complex procedure like brain surgery? The answer, most likely, is a resounding no. Certain tasks, especially those that require a high degree of precision, expertise, judgment, and more importantly, creativity, remain the exclusive domain of people. They require the human touch and the ability to adapt to the unexpected and make critical decisions on the fly, traits that machines and AI, despite their advancements, are yet to master. And that’s a specialist’s superpower.Becoming a “Human in the Loop”So, how do you ensure your relevance in the age of AI? The answer lies in becoming what I like to call a “human in the loop.” Basically, you want to be the person who can use AI tools to your advantage, but also bring your own special sauce to the table. For example, let's say you're a seasoned financial analyst. You could harness the power of AI algorithms to analyze vast amounts of market data, identify trends, and predict potential risks and opportunities. However, it's your deep understanding of the financial markets, economic principles, and the ability to interpret the results in context that will enable you to provide valuable insights and make strategic recommendations to mitigate potential losses.Or let's say you’re a skilled data analyst in the healthcare industry. You could utilize AI algorithms to process vast amounts of patient data and identify potential risk factors. However, it's your deep understanding of the healthcare system and the ability to interpret the results that will enable you to make meaningful recommendations to improve patient outcomes.By combining your specialized expertise with AI tools, you become a superhero of productivity. You're not just working harder; you're working smarter. And that is how you stay ahead of the curve.Embrace the AI RevolutionIn a world where technology is advancing at an unprecedented pace, it's natural to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about your place in the workforce. But you’re not just a cog in the machine and AI does not signify the end of human expertise – it's the onset of a new era where specialists have the power to shape the future of work.Leverage your unique skills, stay adaptable, be curious, proactive, and never stop learning. The world needs your specialized expertise now more than ever, and with the right mindset and tools, you can achieve incredible things. Because in the end, it's not about beating the machines – it's about leveraging their power to become the best version of yourself. You possess the creativity, empathy, and strategic thinking that machines can't replicate – and that's what will set you apart.
